Description

Visit one of Osaka's central food markets accompanied by a Japanese chef, select decadent Japanese beef and other provisions, then head to his "standing bar" style restaurant for an afternoon session on the teppan (Japanese grill), where you'll learn about and take part in Japanese cooking techniques. Naturally, the next step is eating all the goodness! An included glass of sake (Japanese rice wine) is the perfect pair, though you are welcome to substitute one of many other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options.

Here's your chance to visit a bustling local market, get a cooking class, and then compare three different types of fine Japanese beef, learn about sake, and make other Japanese favorites -- all under the tutelage of a Japanese chef, and in a centrally located part of the city.

Upon meeting your guide at Tenma Station (on the JR Loop Line, just one stop from Osaka Station), you'll walk a few short minutes to Purara Tenma, an indoor food market well known for its extensive offerings. While explaining the various vegetables, meats, and seafood, your chef/guide will be doing some shopping along the way. Special attention will be given to the different varieties of Kobe style beef. (We say "style" because there really are almost no cows in Kobe. What is generally referred to as Kobe beef comes from nearby areas, and that's what you'll be enjoying.)

Shopping is just part of this action-packed, 2.5 hours of gustatory joy. The chef's restaurant is under five minutes' walk from the market, and once inside, you'll be given a primer on some basic Japanese cooking techniques. You'll also learn what makes up the flavor profiles behind some of the Japanese foods you love. The chef will also be sure to let you take your hand at the grill, should you wish to do so. By the end of it all, you'll have enjoyed 150g (5.3 oz) or 250g (8.8 oz) of beef (depending on which option you book) across three different types of Japanese beef. Compare and contrast, deliciously. Alongside the beef, Japanese style omelet as well as garlic rice will be served. Enjoy it all as you sip an included glass of sake (Japanese rice wine) or some other drink to your liking.

As our tour winds down, the restaurant opens to regular customers. Take this chance to mingle with locals, or use this meaty afternoon stop as a springboard for the rest of your evening.
